out of step

how fast and how mad
we smear shadows like blood
on the walls
the symphony we beat together
pounding with ache in our sleep

sweet boy please scream for me
we used up all of our dreams
like summer wind in a storm
red, frantic, and furious
we squandered the best of it

we are all wrong and out of order
but you do not go
and I stay on as your apprentice
hoarding seventy-nine beggar lamps
rubbing thrice for wishes
once for light

you’re a hustler baby, come on
bid on my heart
will you take the payoff when you land hard
mama said don’t fall in love with a criminal
right after she said
don’t fry bacon naked

you know where my door is
the multi-colour’d world I lie in
I’ve got your number
(mine + the weather + what’s on tap)
plus each fuzzy dream

is there nothing I can say
that would catch your eye again
am I never to be the red leaf on your tree
a wet-sticky piece of work we are

pleasure and pollution
can’t be far
from total annihilation
of love
-and us
